Making A Dog Birthday Cake

Yesterday we celebrated Mr. Theodore’s 5th birthday. Though we did a lot together to make his day happy (sleeping in, snuggle time, hiking, nap time), one of the highlights of the day was his birthday cake.

This was my first attempt at making one, and it went over so well with the dogs that I wanted to share the recipe.

I looked for recipes online and didn’t entirely love any of them. So I took bits and pieces from other recipes to make my own.

Here it is!

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/8 cup vegetable oil

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 cup applesauce

1 tsp honey

1 egg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine flour and baking soda in large bowl.

In a separate bowl, mix together oil, peanut butter, honey, and applesauce. Once mixed, stir in egg and blend.

Warning: Your dog may beg during this process.

Teddy was waiting for his turn to lick the bowl.

Combine wet and dry ingredients and stir until well blended.

Pour into a greased cake pan or separate equally into cupcake pan (makes one 8″ round cake or about 8 cupcakes.

Bake for 20-30 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before removing from pan.

If you’d like to make frosting, I used a single-serving container of Chobani plain greek yogurt mixed with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Some recipes called for more peanut butter, but this seemed to be the right amount for my dogs.

Please note: This recipe may not be suitable for all dogs. Please check with a veterinarian with concerns.

I spread the “frosting” on top and garnished it with a peanut butter dog bone (peanut butter is Teddy’s favorite).

I tried a little of one of the cupcakes, and it was actually quite delicious, even without sugar. I think a little more honey, and you could probably serve this as a breakfast treat for humans.

But we didn’t have time for that. It was time for the doggie taste test.

After delicately licking off most of the frosting, he dug right in (with a little assistance from mom).

Success! Teddy and his big sister Piper LOVED it! We know what we’ll be making for future birthday celebrations.
