Benefits of a Simpler Life

As you all know, I went from living in 1500 sq. ft. to 300 sq. ft. Quite the change.

You’ve heard about many of the reasons behind this change, what drove us to make this decision. And maybe I haven’t talked enough about one of the things that factored into this choice.

You’ve all heard that we were not as happy as we wanted to be in Minnesota. The amount time we had to put into our jobs to keep our house, the amount of work to keep our house a house — and the weather. We wanted a simpler life with time to enjoy the things that we love.

I wanted time to explore and expand on what I hoped would be a writing career.

And I also wanted to have more time to do things that I felt would make a difference.

In Minnesota, we spent a season volunteering at the Wildlife Rehab Center in Roseville. Getting hands-on and dirty helping out some ducks was a fun activity that made us feel like we were helping. But I wanted to do more.

I wanted to do more than just donate money to causes I felt were important.

World Wildlife Fund, Nature Conservancy, Ocean Conservancy. I picked my top three and dedicated money toward them each year, hoping that my measly funds would do something.

But I wanted more.

The ocean has always been an inspiration.

After landing in SoCal, I have had the time and energy to do more hands-on volunteer work and being on the ground floor of such wonderful organizations has been truly amazing.

I volunteer at the California Wolf Center, where I have learned an amazing amount about North American gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves — as well as meeting some fantastic people who also take time to dedicate themselves to such a cause.

I volunteer at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, where again being hands-on makes me feel like I am able to give back.

Some day, I would love to get my Master’s in Conservation Biology and use my skills as a writer to make an even bigger difference, to reach a wider audience.

In the mean time, I am focusing on learning more — because knowledge and the sharing of knowledge are some of the most important parts of making a difference.

I recently decided to participate in the Rock n’ Roll San Diego 5K and raise money to support the World Wildlife Fund.

I would love and appreciate any and all donations made on my behalf. Please visit the site below if you are able and willing to help me reach my goal!
