Many things change when you move your life into a motorhome and travel around the country.  Your relationships with friends and family change.  Your forms of communication change.  Your relationship with your travel buddy changes.  You change.  These things are to be expected and are something to be considered before heading out onto the road.

You should also consider your financial changes.  We’ve talked a little about how we’ve made money on the road so far but I realize we haven’t gone into very much detail.  Mostly because a lot of people don’t like to talk about money.  I get that; I don’t either (though I do plan to expand on how we’ve managed this adventure at some point).

This year, we filed our taxes with the same tax man we’ve been using for the past several years and he was able to do them just fine because all of our information was still from Minnesota.  We did everything through email and mail (we have a P.O. box here now).  It worked out pretty smoothly but I don’t know that it would have been possible without my parents to help us out.

They photographed and emailed important documents that came late as well as mailed us all the necessary info we needed.  They dug through our finance boxes to find info on selling our home (something I forgot we would need when we filed this year).  It all went pretty well and I have to thank them for their contribution to that success.

But what are we going to do next year?  We will have tax info from multiple states and this is not something that we considered before leaving Minnesota.  It will be an interesting hurdle to jump when tax season comes up next year—certainly not going to worry about it now!  For now, we are just learning to keep things organized in our small space so we have everything ready when we need it.

We get a lot of questions from people about details such as this, people who dream of making the change and traveling but who let questions like this stop them from living the dream.  There are a lot of couples who travel year round or part of the time and they figure it out too!  We are learning as we go and meeting a lot of people like ourselves who have been doing this for a long time.  They love it, encourage it, and are happy to give advice when we ask for it (and sometimes when we don’t).  It’s all part of the journey.
